Do you need Protection? Consider the facts :

Huge numbers of us have no idea how we would cope financially in a crisis, according to a survey.

Some 25 percent of people do not know how they would make ends meet if the main breadwinner died, 21 percent if they suffered a long-term illness and 19 percent if they lost their job, according to a poll of 2,000 people for the Association of British Insurers (ABI).

Others said they would cut back their expenses, manage on remaining income, rely on the state, use savings, rely on family and friends, or sell their house.

Figures show that 23 percent of people will be jobless at some point during their working lives -- more than a third of whom will be out of work for a year or more.

There are also currently 2.4 million people in the UK with long-term illnesses who claim incapacity benefit.

The findings come at a time when fears are mounting over an economic downturn and widespread job losses are expected, particularly in the City.

Nick Starling, the ABI's director of general insurance and health, said: "It is important when people are taking out a loan or a mortgage that they think about how they would meet repayments should they fall ill or become unemployed.

"Insurance can play a role in helping people meet their financial obligations in these circumstances."

There are four main insurance products that can help people should they lose their regular income: life insurance, income protection insurance, critical illness insurance and payment protection insurance.

What State assistance is available if I am unemployed
The Income Support scheme will only pay interest on the part of the loan associated with the house purchase or repairs.

There is a limit of £100,000 on the amount of capital that Income Support can help with the interest on. This means that if the outstanding capital on your loan, or loans, is more than £100,000 then only the interest on £100,000 can be met through Income Support help with the mortgage interest payments.

If you took out your mortgage after 2 October 1995, payments normally won't start until 39 weeks after you claim.

What types of protection should I consider?
  • Buildings Insurance -All lenders require that you fully insure the property for the total cost of rebuilding it. It is also strongly recommended that you take out Contents Insurance to protect your belongings.
  • Life insurance-Life insurance is not a compulsory purchase but you may wish to take out a policy to protect yourself or your family in the event of death or diagnosis of a specified critical illness.
  • Level term life insurance-Provides a fixed lump sum payment should you die within a specified period.
  • Level term life insurance (with critical illness cover)-Provides a specified lump sum payment should you die or suffer a critical illness within a specified period.
  • Mortgage protection cover-Providing a decreasing lump sum payment to cover your outstanding mortgage, should you die within the specified period.
  • Mortgage protection cover with critical illness-Providing a decreasing lump sum payment to cover your outstanding mortgage, should you die or suffer a critical illness within the specified period.
  • Income protection (ASU)-A short term policy to protect your income if you are unable to work due to accident, sickness or unemployment.. Payment Protection Insurance provides invaluable cover for mortgage and loan repayments in case of accident, sickness or unemployment.
  • Permanent Health insurance-Unlike ASU, this type of policy would potentially pay out until your normal retirement age. It covers you in the event of long-term ill health forcing you to stop work. The maximum benefit is based on your income and the premiums would be based on your age and circumstances.
  • Family income Benefit-Low cost term insurance contract which pays a regular income in the event of the death of the insured to end of policy term.
  • Private Medical Insurance-Allows for speedy treatment of a diagnosed medical condition. Fast healthcare treatment, helps avoid NHS waiting lists. Invaluable for the self employed
